About the work
The Recension B (Qíshāzàng 磧砂藏 line) of Amoghavajra’s Bǎoqièyìn tuóluóní jīng (see KR6j0215 for the principal entry on this text). Taishō prints both A and B recensions side-by-side at no. 1022 because they exhibit substantive textual differences — the Korean-canon recension (A, KR6j0215) and the Qíshā-canon recension (B, the present text) descend from divergent transmission lines that diverged within China between the eighth and the thirteenth centuries.
Abstract
The two recensions of the Bǎoqièyìn tuóluóní jīng (T1022A and T1022B) document the textual divergence within the Chinese transmission of one of the most popular East Asian dhāraṇī-sūtras. Recension A descends through the Korean-canon line (高麗藏), which followed the Northern-Sòng (開寶藏) recension; Recension B descends through the Qíshā 磧砂 canon line, an independent Southern-Sòng / Yuán production from the Píngjiāng region. The variants between A and B are concentrated in the dhāraṇī-transliteration itself (where the Qíshā line preserves a more archaic character-set) and in some narrative passages. Both descend from Amoghavajra’s eighth-century original; neither is a re-translation.
