Mìmì yàoshù fǎ 祕密要術法
Method of the Essential Secret Techniques by 阿謨伽 (Amogha [= Amoghavajra], 譯)
About the work
A short Esoteric ritual manual preserved only in the Manji Xùzàngjīng (卍 Xuzangjing, X02 no. 188), attributed to the Tang Esoteric translator under the name Āmójiā 阿謨伽 (= Sanskrit Amogha = abbreviated Amoghavajra; see 阿謨伽 for the name analysis). The text is not preserved in the Taishō main canon and exists only via the supplementary Xùzàngjīng line.
Abstract
The text presents a compendium of mìmì yàoshù 祕密要術 (“essential secret techniques”) — a collection of mudrā, mantra, and maṇḍala-instructions for various Esoteric rites. As a Xùzàngjīng-only text, it represents the supplementary stratum of Esoteric ritual manuals that circulated in late-Tang and Sòng monastic communities outside the principal canonical line. Attribution to Āmójiā (alternate name of Amoghavajra 不空) places the text within his school but its authentic Amoghavajra-origin is uncertain — the Xùzàngjīng-only status and the name-form 阿謨伽 (rather than the standard 不空) suggest possible later compilation under his name. The catalog meta records the catalog form 阿謨伽; the prose treatment correlates this with 不空.
