About the work

A one-fascicle Esoteric ritual manual by Amoghavajra (不空) supplying the yújiā guānxíng yíguǐ (yoga-contemplation ritual procedure) for the heart-mantra of Ārya-Avalokiteśvara (聖觀自在 = Skt. Ārya-Avalokiteśvara, the non-adorned form of Avalokiteśvara — distinguished from the Sahasra-bhuja-Avalokiteśvara and other proliferated forms). CANWWW alt-titles: Shèng Guānzìzài yíguǐ 聖觀自在儀軌, Yújiā guānxíng guǐyí 瑜伽觀行軌儀.

Abstract

The Ārya-Avalokiteśvara heart-mantra (hṛdaya-mantra) is one of the simplest and most-recited Avalokiteśvara mantras (typically in the form oṃ aroḷika svāhā) and the present text provides its full Esoteric ritual context: mudrā-sequence, maṇḍala-construction, guānxíng (visualisation) procedures, and the doctrinal frame within which the practice is to be undertaken. Together with KR6j0228, KR6j0230, and KR6j0231 it forms the core of Amoghavajra’s Avalokiteśvara liturgical corpus.
