Qiānzhuǎn dàmíng tuóluóní jīng 千轉大明陀羅尼經

Sūtra of the Thousand-Turning Great Vidyā Dhāraṇī by 施護 (Dānapāla, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Northern-Sòng re-translation by Dānapāla (施護) of the thousand-turning Avalokiteśvara dhāraṇī tradition that Zhìtōng 智通 had translated in 653 (KR6j0233 T1035). Dānapāla’s version is conducted from a freshly-imported Sanskrit manuscript at the Northern-Sòng Yìjīng yuàn 譯經院 and represents a recension distinct from Zhìtōng’s earlier translation.

Abstract

Dānapāla’s late-tenth / early-eleventh-century translation of the Qiānzhuǎn dàmíng tuóluóní updates the Tang-period vocabulary of KR6j0233 to the Northern-Sòng standard transliteration norms (which by the late tenth century used Siddham Sanskrit script and a more philologically-precise fǎnqiè phonetic apparatus). The two recensions — Zhìtōng (Tang, 653) and Dānapāla (Sòng, ca. 990) — together document the centuries-long evolution of the Qiānzhuǎn dhāraṇī tradition in Chinese transmission.
