Comprehensive Tabulated Sequenced-Recitation Secret Most-Essential Abridged Method of the Cintāmaṇi-Wheel-Turning Sage-King by 解脫師子 (Jiětuōshīzǐ, Vimokṣa-siṃha, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Tang Esoteric lüèfǎ 略法 (“abridged method”) on the Cintāmaṇi-cakra Avalokiteśvara — here styled the Cintāmaṇi-mahā-cakra-vartin Sage-King (如意摩尼轉輪聖王) — translated by Jiětuōshīzǐ (解脫師子, Skt. Vimokṣa-siṃha), a Tang-period figure not mentioned in the standard gāosēng zhuàn and known only through this one canonical attribution. The text is the only canonical work credited to him.

Abstract

The text is organised by pǐn 品 chapters; the first is Xiàngmào pǐn dìyī 相貌品第一 — the lakṣaṇa / iconography chapter. The work expounds the Cintāmaṇi-cakra deity in his cakra-vartin (轉輪聖王) regalia, gives the iconographic specification (the cintāmaṇi held aloft, the dharmacakra, the lotus, etc.), the ritual procedure for sequenced recitation of the vidyā and hṛdaya spells, the maṇḍala-arrangement, and the closing dedication. The dōubiǎo (都表) opening of the title — “comprehensive tabulated” — promises a synoptic summary of the deity-cycle in tabular form. The translator’s name Jiětuōshīzǐ = Vimokṣa-siṃha — “Lion of Liberation” — has the form of a translated Sanskrit monastic name, suggesting an Indian or Central-Asian translator who left no other canonical attribution and is otherwise unattested in the standard biographical sources.
