Maṇḍala Sūtra of Samantabhadra Spoken by the Buddha (Samantabhadra-maṇḍala-sūtra) by 施護 (Shīhù, Dānapāla, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Northern Sòng maṇḍala-sūtra on Samantabhadra translated by Dānapāla (施護). The text is the principal Sòng-period canonical witness to the Samantabhadra-maṇḍala as developed in the late-tenth-century Indian yoga-tantra tradition, parallel to and complementing the earlier Tang-period Samantabhadra-Vajrasattva yíguǐ of Amoghavajra (KR6j0337KR6j0340).

Abstract

The text expounds the construction and abhiṣeka sequence of the Samantabhadra-maṇḍala: the central Samantabhadra-Vajrasattva and his retinue of bodhisattva-vidyā-consorts, the maṇḍala-iconography, the vidyā-formulae and mudrā-repertoire, and the operative ritual procedures. The text reflects the late-tenth-century Indian yoga-tantra state of the Samantabhadra-Vajrasattva tradition and the Sòng imperial reception of this material into the Chinese canon.
