Wénshūshīlì bǎozàng tuóluóní jīng 文殊師利寶藏陀羅尼經

Sūtra of the Treasury Dhāraṇī of Mañjuśrī by 菩提流志 (Pútíliúzhì, Bodhiruci, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle parallel recension of T1185A (KR6j0410), bearing the slightly truncated title Bǎozàng tuóluóní jīng (without 法-) and an authoritative subtitle 亦名文殊師利菩薩八字三昧法 (“also called the Mañjuśrī-Eight-Syllable-Samādhi Method”). Translation likewise attributed to Bodhiruci (菩提流志).

Abstract

The text reproduces the opening of T1185A (KR6j0410) almost verbatim: the Tuṣita Pure Abode setting; the Buddha’s Yǎnguāng samādhi; the light-rays passing through Mañjuśrī into Vajraguhyaka; and Vajraguhyaka’s request for the dhāraṇī. The two recensions diverge only in the body of the vidhi and in some textual details. The subtitle 八字三昧法 makes the doctrinal classification explicit: this is the Eight-Syllable Mañjuśrī samādhi cycle (cf. KR6j0409 and KR6j0410), with the same eight-syllable mantra oṃ a vī ra hūṃ kha ca raḥ at its core.

The two-recension structure is typical of the Tang Esoteric translation bureau: a primary translation (T1185A) and a slightly polished parallel (T1185B), both circulating under Bodhiruci’s name. The Taishō editors retained both because the variant readings are not perfectly reducible and each preserves details lost in the other.

The dating bracket follows Bodhiruci’s translation activity (693–727).
