About the work
A one-fascicle anonymous late-Táng or post-Táng Esoteric ritual manual on Acala’s protective function as pacifier of households and kingdoms (ānzhèn jiāguó = “pacify-and-stabilize household-and-state”). The text has no translator-attribution and is conventionally placed in the late Táng to Five Dynasties period.
Abstract
The text opens with a doctrinal frame in which Vairocana (毘盧遮那如來), out of compassion for sentient beings caught in the ocean of saṃsāra, manifests his wrathful protective body (威德光明自在之身), giving it the name Acala-Vajra-Vidyārāja (不動金剛明王). His explicit function: 「能與人天安樂利益。安鎮家國無衰患」 — “to bestow peace and benefit on humans and devas, and to pacify-and-stabilize household-and-state, removing all decline and suffering”. When a kingdom suffers from many calamities (多諸災難), Acala’s rite is the proper response.
The body of the text is the practical vidhi of the Acala state-protection rite:
- The conditions calling for the rite — natural calamities, abnormal celestial phenomena (sun and moon), cattle plagues, drought, war, civil unrest;
- The site-selection and altar-construction;
- The abhiṣeka of the ācārya prior to performing the rite;
- The seven-day or twenty-one-day recitation programme;
- The post-rite dispersal and merit-dedication.
This is one of the central texts of the Táng-Esoteric state-protection literature (hùguó 護國), of a piece with the Rénwáng jīng tradition but mediated through the wrathful Acala rather than the bodhisattva-assembly. The text represents a stabilization of the Acala-state-protection rite into a self-standing manual after the foundational 不空 Amoghavajra–金剛智 Vajrabodhi translations had been absorbed.
The dating bracket (760–950) brackets the late-Amoghavajra-period to mid-tenth-century range during which such anonymous ritual handbooks were produced and stabilized in the Esoteric tradition.
