Method of the Blue-Coloured Great Vajra-Yakṣa for Repelling Demons-and-Māras by 空蜝 (Kōnglè, 述)

About the work

A short one-fascicle Táng Esoteric ritual manual on the Blue-Coloured Vajra-Yakṣa (青色大金剛藥叉) — a specifically blue-skinned iconographic variant of Vajra-Yakṣa — used for the repelling of demons-and-māras (辟鬼魔). The colophon attributes the text to Kōnglè (空蜝) of the Shark-Dragon Grotto: 「鮫龍洞阿闍梨位空蜝述」. The variant title-line gives an alternate name 亦名辟鬼殊法 (“also called: Method-of-Repelling-Demons of [the] Different [Yakṣa]”).

Abstract

The text begins with the Root-Seal (根本印) of the deity: “Both palms together; bend the two index fingers (受指) into the palm so that the joints meet back-to-back. With the right thumb (想指) press against the tip of the left middle finger, with the left thumb press against the tip of the right middle finger, forming a wheel-like shape. Wherever this seal is shown, all māras and guǐ are crushed-and-destroyed.”

The text then provides:

  1. The damage-spell true-mantra (□害真言) — the single core mantra of the rite (the source-graph at the head of the line is illegible/corrupted in the witness, marked □);
  2. The corresponding mudrā-cycle;
  3. The visualization of the blue-coloured Vajra-Yakṣa;
  4. The practical application — the repelling of demons-and-māras from a household, a sick person, or a community under demonic affliction.

The text is an example of the localised, practitioner-compiled Esoteric ritual manual of the late-Táng to Five-Dynasties period, in which an obscure local ācārya — here Kōnglè of the Shark-Dragon Grotto — codifies an extracted demon-repelling rite from the broader Vajra-Yakṣa cycle (cf. KR6j0447) for practical use. The dating bracket (750–900) reflects this late-Táng to Five-Dynasties context.
