About the work
A short Táng dhāraṇī-sūtra by 義淨 Yìjìng, the colophon “三藏法師義淨奉制譯”. The text and KR6j0605 (T1374) share a partial title (zhuāngyán-wáng 莊嚴王) but are distinct sūtras: the present one is a dhāraṇī-text in the Avalokiteśvara-and-Mañjuśrī-frame, while T1374 is the Maitreya-frame gōngdé-zhuāngyán dhāraṇī-sūtra.
Abstract
The Buddha sits on Mount Potalaka (布怛洛迦山, Pūdáluòjiā shān) — Avalokiteśvara’s mountain — addressing devas, men, and the great assembly. Looking out in all ten directions, he addresses Avalokiteśvara and Mañjuśrī (Miào-jíxiáng 妙吉祥): “There is a sūtra called Yīqiè rúlái suǒhù-guānchá zhòngshēng shìxiàn fó-chà zhuāngyán-wáng tuóluóní — ‘all Tathāgatas-protecting-and-observing-beings-and-displaying-Buddha-fields Adornment-King dhāraṇī’. When I first generated the bodhi-mind, in the presence of the Buddha Huā-guāng xiǎnxiàn 花光顯現 (“Lotus-Brilliance-Manifestation”), 9,000,000,000 beings hearing this teaching attained part of Buddha-wisdom and received predictions; I too received my prediction at that time. With my Buddha-eye I have seen 30,000 past Tathāgatas teaching this dharma to beings; on each occasion, Avalokiteśvara and Mañjuśrī were the principal attendants in the assembly”. The text then recites the dhāraṇī and lists its benefits: bodily and mental purity, freedom from karmic obstruction, the breath of sandal from the practitioner’s mouth, eyes clear like blue utpala leaves, day-and-night vision of Buddha-images and great bodhisattvas.
