About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 法賢 Fǎxián. It is the narrative-frame counterpart to the bare-spell text KR6j0614 (T1382). Both texts share the same dhāraṇī-purpose, but the spell-formulae differ slightly: T1383 uses a Ratna- / Ratnaketu-grounded invocation, whereas T1382 uses an Akṣobhya-grounded one.
Abstract
The Buddha addresses Ānanda: there is a dhāraṇī called Sùmìng-zhì 宿命智 (“Knowledge of Past Lives”). One who hears it and upholds it with single-minded devotion has the heaviest karma of a thousand aeons (千劫之中極重罪業) wiped clean. One who recites it without lapse for life will, throughout seven koṭi future births, possess constant memory of past lives. The Buddha then pronounces the spell: homage to the Three Jewels and to the Tathāgata Ratnaśikhin (囉怛那室詰泥 = Ratnaśikhi- “the Jewel-Crested-One”), the Worthy and Fully Awakened — tadyathā oṃ ratne ratne suratne ratnodbhave mahā-ratna-kīrṇi ratna-saṃbhave svāhā. Ānanda hails the teaching, prostrates, and withdraws.
The text is the most compact possible illustration of the Sòng-translated dhāraṇī genre: a single doctrinal claim (the spell extinguishes karmic obstruction and confers jātismara), a single spell-formula, a closing assent. Recorded in the Dà-zhōng-xiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0889.
