About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 法賢 Fǎxián. Miàosè 妙色 (“subtle/beautiful form”) is best taken as Skt. Surūpa — a known dhāraṇī-name that recurs across the Sòng-Institute vidyā corpus.
Abstract
The Buddha addresses Ānanda: there is a dhāraṇī called Miàosè — proclaimed in unison by the Tathāgatas of all three times, of great benefit to beings. One who hears it, conceives a sense of its rarity, and recites and venerates it with vigorous mind, will obtain great merit and be protected day and night. Further: a practitioner of compassionate mind, in a quiet place, with various foods set out as offerings, may recite the dhāraṇī seven times over the food (加持已作) — the offering then satisfies hungry-ghosts and yakṣa-class beings, who in turn benefit the practitioner with abundance and security. The dhāraṇī thus combines an apotropaic function with a piṇḍa-/preta-feeding function akin to the Yúqié yànkǒu tradition. Recorded in the Dà-zhōng-xiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0886. The CANWWW alt-title block lists Surūpadhāraṇī(sūtra) under the broader Parṇaśabarī-related cluster (T1407, q.v.), but the specific Sanskrit ascription for T1386 remains tentative.
