Fó shuō Wúwèi tuóluóní jīng 佛說無畏陀羅尼經

Sūtra of the Abhaya-dhāraṇī (Fearlessness)

by 法賢 (譯)

About the work

A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 法賢 Fǎxián. Wúwèi 無畏 = Skt. abhaya (“fearlessness”). The CANWWW alternate title 無畏經 Wúwèi jīng is also attested.

Abstract

The Buddha addresses the assembled bhikṣus: pay close attention; I shall now proclaim the Abhaya-dhāraṇī, by which the dangers (難 bhaya) confronting beings may be wholly removed. Whoever hears and upholds it will gain immeasurable, boundless merit. The Buddha then pronounces the spell, opening with the standard Avalokiteśvara invocation: oṃ namaḥ āryāvalokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya mahāsattvāya …. The work thereby places its protective function under the patronage of Mahā-karuṇika Avalokiteśvara. Recorded in the Dà-zhōng-xiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N1008.
