About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 法賢 Fǎxián. The five ānantarya / pañcānantarīya-karman (五逆罪) are: matricide, parricide, killing an arhat, drawing the blood of a Buddha, and causing schism in the saṅgha — the gravest karmic offences in Buddhist ethics, traditionally not removable by any conventional means.
Abstract
The Buddha addresses Ānanda: there is a great dhāraṇī of immense power and immeasurable merit, capable of extinguishing the five ānantarya sins. One who hears this dhāraṇī, and with utmost mind upholds, recites it for the rest of his life — the merit obtained equals that of upholding a thousand Buddhas. The Buddha then pronounces the spell: homage to the Three Jewels, homage to Ārya-Avalokiteśvara the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, the great compassionate one — tadyathā oṃ śuddhe viśuddhe suviśuddhe niti pariniti puṣpe …. The dhāraṇī is an Avalokiteśvara-grounded karma-pariśodhana spell. Recorded in the Dà-zhōng-xiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0891.
