About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 法賢 Fǎxián. Bǎojì 寶髻 = “jewel-topknot” / “jewel-crested” = Skt. Ratnaśikhin — both a Buddha-epithet and the name of a particular vidyā-deity, well-attested in Indian Buddhism (the Ratnaśikhin-tathāgata of the Saṃdhinirmocana and other Mahāyāna scripture-lists).
Abstract
The Buddha addresses Ānanda. Long ago, when Indra (帝釋) was defeated and put to flight by the asuras in their cosmic war, he came in fear to the Buddha begging for protection. The Buddha (in his prior-birth identity) reassured Indra and recounted that in a past kalpa, in a Buddha-realm called Guānzhào 觀照 (“Vision-Light”), there was a Buddha Guānzìzài rúlái 觀自在如來 (= Avalokiteśvara-Tathāgata) who bestowed the Bǎojì dhāraṇī. This dhāraṇī, declared in unison by koṭis of Buddhas, has the power to bring auspiciousness; one who recites or transcribes it gains protection from all calamities. The text exemplifies the Sòng-period dhāraṇī-genre’s deep absorption of Indian jātaka / avadāna narrative-frames as authorising matter for the spell.
