About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 施護 Shīhù (Dānapāla, d. 1017). CANWWW restores the Sanskrit title as Hiraṇyavatī-dhāraṇī(sūtra) — i.e. “Sūtra of the Hiraṇyavatī (Golden-Endowed) Dhāraṇī”. Zǒngchíwáng 總持王 = Dhāraṇī-rāja.
Abstract
The Buddha is in Tuṣita heaven (覩史多天 Tuṣita) with countless thousand bodhisattva-mahāsattvas — the Miàozhù 妙住 (= Susthita-mati?) bodhisattva chief among them — all attaining irreversibility on the bodhisattva-yāna and to be the next Buddhas. With them are countless devas and their retinues. The Buddha, seated upon the great jewel-throne, surveys the assembly and prepares to expound the dharma. Miàozhù bodhisattva rises, performs the five-limb prostration, and addresses the Buddha: if a kulaputra obtains and upholds this rúyìbǎo zǒngchí spell-formulary with single-mindedness, he attains protection through past, present, and future. The Buddha pronounces the Hiraṇyavatī dhāraṇī, with its cintāmaṇi-class wish-fulfilling function. Recorded in the Dàzhōngxiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0836.
