Fó shuō Liánhuáyǎn tuóluóní jīng 佛說蓮華眼陀羅尼經
Sūtra of the Padma-locanā Dhāraṇī (Lotus-Eyed One)
by 施護 (譯)
About the work
A very brief single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 施護 Shīhù (Dānapāla, d. 1017). CANWWW alt-title 蓮華眼經. The text is the bare vidyā preceded only by the standard refuge formula. Liánhuáyǎn 蓮華眼 = Skt. Padma-locana / Padma-netra — “lotus-eyed”, a standard epithet of Avalokiteśvara.
Abstract
The text consists exclusively of the dhāraṇī, opening: “Homage to the Three Jewels. Homage to the Ārya-Padmanetra-tray-tathāgata. Homage to the Sarva-nivaraṇa-viṣkambhi-bodhisattva-mahāsattva. Tadyathā oṃ tāra tāra tiri tiri turu turu kara kara kile kile kuru kuru bara bara biri biri buru buru naya naya kuru kuru mokṣapāya svāhā jvāla-navahini nibhe svāhā sarva-tathāgata-pratiṣṭhite svāhā ma…” etc. The dhāraṇī is structured around invocation of Sarva-nivaraṇa-viṣkambhin, one of the eight upapuṣa-bodhisattvas of the vajradhātu-maṇḍala, whose name (= “remover of all obstructions”) aligns with the dhāraṇī’s apotropaic function. Recorded in the Dàzhōngxiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0827.
