About the work
A very brief single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 施護 Shīhù (Dānapāla, d. 1017). CANWWW alt-title 寶生經. Bǎoshēng 寶生 = Skt. Ratnasambhava (or, more precisely, the abbreviated form Ratna- “Jewel-Born”) — the Tathāgata of the South in the standard vajradhātu-maṇḍala scheme of the Five Jinas.
Abstract
The text consists of a refuge to the Ratnasambhava-tathāgata of the South, with full epithets — Ratna-raśmi-candra-prati-maṇḍita-vijñāna-tejorāja-tathāgata (囉怛曩囉濕彌贊捺囉鉢囉底曼尼哆尾儞焰帝惹具世濕嚩囉羅惹野怛他誐哆引野 — i.e. Ratnaraśmi-candra-pratimaṇḍita-vijñā(na)-tejaḥ-svara-rāja-Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Fully Awakened) — followed by the dhāraṇī itself: tadyathā ratne ratne ratna-kīrṇi ratna-pratimaṇḍite ratna-saṃbhavi ratna-prabhā ratnodbhavodgate svāhā. The text concludes: “If beings receive, hold, and venerate this Tathāgata’s dhāraṇī and name, in birth after birth they will be born as cakravartin kings, accomplish the brahma-cariya faculty, attain great supernormal powers, obtain the ten dhāraṇīs, and meet Buddhas as numerous as the Ganges sands.” Recorded in the Dàzhōngxiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0838.
