Fó shuō Zūnshèng dàmíngwáng jīng 佛說尊勝大明王經
Sūtra of the Triumphant Great-Vidyā King
by 施護 (譯)
About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 施護 Shīhù (Dānapāla, d. 1017). The title Zūnshèng dàmíngwáng 尊勝大明王 = “Triumphant Mahā-vidyā-rāja”. The work belongs to the broader Vijaya / Uṣṇīṣa-vijayā family of vidyās — though distinct from the canonical T967–971 Uṣṇīṣa-vijayā-dhāraṇī-cluster.
Abstract
The Buddha addresses Ānanda: there is a Zūnshèng dàmíngwáng — proclaimed by the Buddhas of the past, including seven koṭi-Tathāgatas who have likewise rejoiced in proclaiming it. The Buddha now expounds it for beings of the future age. Ānanda is to listen well: the practitioner — kulaputra or kuladuhitṛ — wishing to hear, recite, and uphold this vidyā, must first purify body and mind, take refuge in all the Buddhas, the Dharma, the Saṅgha, then in Mahākaruṇika Avalokiteśvara the bodhisattva-mahāsattva, then in the Lokanātha protector of this Sahā-world, and in all the vidyādhara-devas. After this complete refuge-taking the vidyā may be recited. The dhāraṇī follows. Recorded in the Dàzhōngxiángfú fǎbǎo lù; Nanjio N0834. The text is a small but doctrinally precise example of the vidyādhara-class vidyā with its characteristic graduated refuge-formula.
