About the work
A short single-juan dhāraṇī-sūtra translated at the Sòng 譯經院 by 施護 Shīhù (Dānapāla, d. 1017). CANWWW alt-title 金身經. Jīnshēn 金身 = Skt. Suvarṇa-kāya / Hiraṇya-vapuḥ — “golden-bodied”, an epithet of Amitāyus / Amitābha and other Buddhas.
Abstract
The Buddha, for the universal benefit of beings, proclaims this dhāraṇī. The text gives the spell directly without substantial narrative-frame: homage to the Buddhas, present and future Pratyeka-Buddhas (摩帝多那誐多 = atīta-anāgata; 鉢囉怛踰怛半那 pratyutpanna — i.e. “past, future, and present”), homage to Amitābha-tathāgata the Worthy One, the Fully Awakened — tadyathā oṃ māvīrī māvīrī medhāvati medhāvati amṛtod-bhave buddha-mati buddha-bhāṣitā sarva-dharma-arkajvalini buddhi buddhi mahā-buddhe mahā-vī… etc. The dhāraṇī thus combines an Amitābha-orbit invocation with a prajñā / medhā (wisdom) emphasis and a formal Buddhāntara-recapitulation.
