Lèngyán jīng zhèngmài shū kē 楞嚴經正脉疏科
Sectional Outline of the Commentary on the Correct Pulse of the Śūraṃgamasūtra by 真鑑 (作)
About the work
A ten-fascicle (10卷) sectional-outline (kē 科) accompanying 真鑑’s magnum-opus Zhèngmài shū (KR6j0683, X12 no. 275) — the late-Wànlì reform commentary on the Śūraṃgamasūtra. The kē genre, established for the Lèngyán by 子璿’s short Yìshū kē KR6j0674, here takes its full Míng form: the outline runs to a substantial 10 fascicles in the manner of the parent commentary. Preserved as X12 no. 273 in the Xùzàngjīng.
Abstract
The work opens with the standard Lèngyán-outline header: “The great division is into three: 1. The title (Dàfódǐng); 2. The translators (three subdivisions); 3. The main text” (大分為三:一題目(大佛);二譯人(三):一主譯人(天竺);二譯音人(烏長) …) — thus already differing from Zǐxuán’s Yìshū kē in the more elaborate handling of the translator-attribution layer (Pramiti, the zhǔyìrén 主譯人; the yìyīnrén 譯音人 of Wūcháng / Uḍyāna; etc.), characteristic of Zhēnjiàn’s emphasis on the philological history of the sūtra. The outline serves as the topical key to the Zhèngmài shū’s argument and follows precisely the parent commentary’s sectional analysis.
The dating bracket is set to 1576 – 1617, corresponding to Zhēnjiàn’s productive monastic career between his ordination in Wànlì 4 (1576) and his death.
