Lèngyán jīng zhèngjiàn 楞嚴經正見

“Right View” Commentary on the Śūraṃgama-sūtra by 濟時 (述)

About the work

A ten-fascicle (10卷) Línjì-school commentary on the Śūraṃgama-sūtra (KR6j0118) by Xìngfú Huìgōng Jìshí 興福會公濟時 濟時, abbot of the Gǔ Xìngfú Chánsì 古興福禪寺 at Lóudōng 婁東 (Tàicāng, Jiāngsū). The author identifies himself in the colophon as Zhù Lóudōng Gǔ Xìngfú Chánsì shāmén Jìshí shù 住婁東古興福禪寺沙門濟時述. Preserved as X16 no. 317 in the Xùzàngjīng. The title — zhèngjiàn 正見, “right view” — frames the work as a corrective to the proliferating sectarian Lèngyán commentarial divisions.

Prefaces

A preface by 盛符升 Shèng Fúshēng 盛符升 (a Kūnshān co-disciple, then 89 suì, dated Kāngxī 38 jǐmǎo 己卯 winter [1699/early-1700]) records the genesis of the work. In wùyín 戊寅 spring (Kāngxī 37 = 1698), Jìshí completed his earlier Jīngāng jīng tíyào 金剛提要 金剛提要 (Vajracchedikā compendium); soon thereafter he produced the present Lèngyán zhèngjiàn. Shèng Fúshēng provides a substantial historiographical introduction to the Lèngyán commentarial tradition: from Chóngfú Quègōng 崇福慤公 慤公 (the first commentary, traced from the original fángxiāng房融 Fáng Róng’s — translation); through Guǎntáo Zhèngōng 振公 振公 (eight-section / seven-topic structural division); through Zīzhōng Yuángōng 資中沅公 沅公 (the source of Tiāntái-school sānfǎ sānguān method, continued by Gūshān Yuángōng 孤山圓公 圓公); through Chángqìng Yǎngōng 長慶巘公 巘公 (origin of the Chán-school commentary tradition); to Sòng-period Chángshuǐ Zǐxuán 長水璿公 子璿 (synthesis of Xiánshǒu and Tiāntái); and on through the Sòng-Yuán “differentiation” of the post-Sòng commentarial schools. Shèng Fúshēng concludes that Jìshí’s work, though firmly Línjì-school in lineage, recovers the pre-Sòng synthetic spirit.

Abstract

The Zhèngjiàn is the principal Línjì-school commentary of the late seventeenth century, complementing 元賢’s Cáodòng-school Lüèshū (KR6j0710), the Tiāntái-school Dìngjiě (KR6j0714), the Huáyán-school Bǎojìng shū (KR6j0724) and Zhǐzhǎng shū (KR6j0716). It is described as the product of three years’ “withered sitting” (kūzuò sānnián 枯坐三年) followed by a single night’s awakening, after which Jìshí “fused them together within the single mind / threefold contemplation” (rónghuì yú yīxīn sānguān 融會於一心三觀). Composition: 1698–1699.
