Guānzìzài púsà rúyìxīn tuóluóní jīng lüèshū 觀自在菩薩如意心陀羅尼經略疏

Abridged Commentary on the Avalokiteśvara Wish-Heart Dhāraṇī Sūtra by 續法 (述)

About the work

A two-fascicle (2卷) abridged commentary by Bótíng Xùfǎ 伯亭續法 續法 (1641–1728), the early-Qīng Huáyán-school revivalist, on the Guānzìzài púsà rúyìxīn tuóluóní jīng 觀自在菩薩如意心陀羅尼經 (= the Avalokiteśvara-cintāmaṇi-cakra-dhāraṇī-sūtra, with a longer parallel form known as the Rúyìlún-wáng tuóluóní jīng 如意輪王陀羅尼經), translated into Chinese by Yìjìng 義淨 義淨 (635–713) under imperial command. Preserved as X23 no. 447 in the Xùzàngjīng.

Prefaces

The preface narrates the lineage of the dhāraṇī’s transmission and describes Xùfǎ’s role: “Cíyún Guàndǐng 慈雲灌頂 jiǎngzhǔ (i.e., Xùfǎ, called by his Cíyún-sì residence and guàndǐng honorific) — having deeply investigated the teaching-vehicles, broadly translated the secret-categories — once composed a commentary on this text, long preserved in scroll-form. The lay-Buddhist Zhōu Zǐ Xuànxiàn jūshì 周子鉉現居士 周鉉現 of Jīngshān, walking the Bodhisattva-path; and the visiting Dharma-master Hóngyuǎn Yǒng 弘遠湧 弘遠湧 of the East, deeply skilled in zōng and shuō, took common joy in the commentary and donated funds [for its publication].” Composition window: 1685 (Xùfǎ’s mature scholarly period) – 1728 (his death).

Abstract

The Lüèshū extends Xùfǎ’s broad Huáyán-school dhāraṇī commentary project (with KR6j0719 Shìzhì-zhāng shūchāo and KR6j0733 Zūnshèng tuóluóní jīng shì) to the Avalokiteśvara-cintāmaṇi-cakra dhāraṇī. The reading places the dhāraṇī within the Mahāyāna zǒngchí 總持 (“comprehensive-holder”) tradition: the real meaning of the dhāraṇī’s cakra (“wheel”) is the fully-rounded fruit-ocean (yuányuán guǒhǎi 圓圓果海) that “rises high above the bitter-bitter sentient beings.” Xùfǎ’s exegesis applies the standard Huáyán-school shímén 十門 method to the dhāraṇī. The work is one of the principal early-Qīng dhāraṇī commentaries.
