About the work
A one-fascicle (1卷) Esoteric ritual manual for inducing prophetic dream-visions, identified in the source colophon as composed by Dàxìngshànsì fānjīngyuàn guàndǐng āshélí 大興善寺翻經院灌頂阿闍梨 (“the Mūrdha-abhiṣikta (consecrated) ācārya of the Translation Bureau at the Dàxìngshànsì”). The catalog meta attributes the work to Bùkōng 不空 (Amoghavajra, 705–774); the source colophon’s “consecrated ācārya” likely refers to Bùkōng or one of his immediate Esoteric-school successors at the Chángān Translation Bureau. Preserved as X59 no. 1052 in the Xùzàngjīng.
Abstract
The manual opens: “I have now perused the secret-treasury essential text. There is the Method for Achieving Dream-Visions, expounded for the sake of the sentient beings of the latter age. The procedural ritual: in a pure room construct a square maṇḍala of free size; furnish the maṇḍala with offerings — incense, flowers, oil-lamps, food, fruit, ghee, honey, huānxǐtuán 歡喜團 (modaka), and so on. Take fresh items as season permits.”
The text then proceeds to lay out the quànqǐngfǎ 勸請法 (invitation-and-invocation procedure), the zhòu (mantra) for invoking the various deities, and the meditative and physical posture for inducing the prophetic dream. The work is one of a small group of Tang Esoteric mèngxiǎng (“dream-vision”) manuals — methods for inducing prophetic dreams as forms of siddhi — preserved in the Xùzàngjīng dhāraṇī collections. Composition window: Bùkōng’s mature ācārya period or shortly after, c. 750–800.
