The Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya: Varṣā-vastu (Rains-Retreat) by 義淨 (Yìjìng, 譯)
About the work
A one-fascicle Chinese translation of the Varṣā-vastu 安居事 — the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya skandhaka on the procedure for the three-month rains-retreat (Skt. varṣā / Pali vassa). 安居 ān-jū “settled-dwelling” renders the practice; 事 shì corresponds to vastu “matter”. Translated by Yìjìng (義淨) at Cháng’ān in the early 8th century.
Prefaces
Translator’s colophon: 大唐三藏義淨奉制譯.
Abstract
The Varṣā-vastu presents the canonical procedure for the vassa: when it begins (the standard “first” and “later” vassa), the boundary-conventions (sīma), the seven-day permission (saptāha-kalpa) for travel during the retreat, and the various interruption-procedures. The Sanskrit Varṣāvastu survives in the Gilgit manuscripts (Hu-von Hinüber 1991, Chung 1998).
