About the work
A one-fascicle Chinese translation of the Pravāraṇā-vastu 隨意事 — the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya skandhaka on the pravāraṇā (“mutual invitation”), the assembly held at the close of the vassa in which monks invite mutual fraternal correction. 隨意 suí-yì “according to one’s wish” translates the practice. Translated by Yìjìng (義淨) at Cháng’ān in the early 8th century.

Abstract
The Pravāraṇā is one of the most distinctive monastic rituals of all Buddhist Vinaya traditions: the public exchange of formal corrections among assembled monks at the close of the rainy-season retreat. The vastu records the canonical procedure, the formula of invitation, the response, and the resolution of disputes that arise in the ceremony. The Sanskrit Pravāraṇāvastu is preserved in the Gilgit manuscripts; Chung (1998) provides a detailed comparative study of the Sarvāstivāda and Mūlasarvāstivāda recensions.
