About the work

A one-fascicle Chinese translation of the summary verses (攝頌 shè-sòng = Skt. uddāna / piṇḍoddāna) for the Mūlasarvāstivāda Nidāna-mātṛkā (KR6k0033). The verse-summaries serve as mnemonic indexes to the parent text. Translated by Yìjìng (義淨) in the early 8th century.

Prefaces

Abstract

The uddāna genre — verse-summaries that catalogue the topics or karman-types covered in the parent prose work — is a standard feature of the Indian Vinaya literature, providing both mnemonic aids for memorisation and finding-aids for reference. The Mūlasarvāstivāda’s elaborate uddāna systems are well-preserved across Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese, and are an important resource for textual reconstruction. This compendium of summary verses was translated as a separate work by Yìjìng for use as an organizational aid to the parent Nidāna-mātṛkā.
