The Sūtra of the Ten Precepts and Procedural Norms for Novice Monks by 施護 (Dānapāla, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle Sòng-period translation of a Sanskrit śrāmaṇera-precepts sūtra by Dānapāla 施護 (施護) at the imperial Yìjīngyuàn 譯經院, late 10th to early 11th century.

Prefaces

Translator’s colophon: 宋西天三藏施護奉詔譯.

Abstract

The text is one of the late Sòng translations of Indian śrāmaṇera-precept manuals, supplementing the older Chinese translations (KR6k0060, KR6k0061). Dānapāla’s translation reflects the Indian Mūlasarvāstivāda recension of the novice precepts as practised in 10th-century India. The text was used as a supplementary practical handbook for novice training in Sòng-period Chinese monasteries.
