Recorded Exposition of the Bodhisattva Precept-Text of the Brahmajāla Sūtra by 勝莊 (Sŭngjang, 撰)

About the work

A two-fascicle commentary on the Fànwǎng bodhisattva-precepts by the Silla-dynasty Korean scholar Sŭngjang 勝莊 (勝莊), composed during his Tang-period activity at Cháng’ān. The commentary represents a Yogācāra-Cí’ēn 慈恩 reading.

Prefaces

Author’s colophon: 西大律者勝莊撰.

Abstract

Sŭngjang’s commentary preserves the Yogācāra-influenced Tang-Silla scholastic interpretation of the bodhisattva-precepts. Sŭngjang himself participated in 義淨 Yìjìng’s translation projects at Cháng’ān, giving him direct access to the late-Indian Mahāyāna bodhisattva-vinaya tradition that informs the commentary.
