About the work

A two-fascicle Sòng-period Mahāyāna vinaya sūtra, translated by Zhì Jíxiáng 智吉祥 (智吉祥). Preserved in the Jīn Edition 金藏 (the Sòng-period Jīn-dynasty 金 stone-canon), one of the alternative Sòng/Jīn-period Buddhist canons.

Abstract

The text is a Mahāyāna sūtra on the bodhisattva-vinaya in its “supreme” Mahāyāna form, translated in the late Northern Sòng. Its preservation in the Jīn Edition rather than in the Taishō reflects the alternate manuscript-stream traditions that supplemented the dominant transmission. The Jīn 金 (Jurchen) canon, engraved 1148–1173 at Xièzhōu 解州 in present-day Shanxi, preserves a number of texts not in the standard Buddhist canon.
