Abstract

The “heart” (心 xīn) genre — distillations of the essential meaning of a doctrinal corpus — was popular in late-Tang Chinese Buddhism. This Vinaya xīn presents the essential content of monastic discipline in compressed form for instructional use. As a Dunhuang manuscript, it preserves a working text from the late-Tang Dunhuang Buddhist communities.
