Dàshèng liùqíng chànhuǐ 大乘六情懺悔

Mahāyāna Repentance for the Six Sense-faculties by 元曉 (Wǒnhyo, 撰)

About the work

A single-fascicle Silla chànhuǐ 懺悔 (repentance) liturgy by Wǒnhyo 元曉 (元曉, 617–686) for the six sense-faculties (liùqíng 六情 = liùgēn 六根: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind). Author signature: 釋元曉撰.

Prefaces

The work opens directly: 若依法界始遊行者。於四威儀無一唐遊。念諸佛不思議德。常思實相杇銷業障 (“Whoever begins to roam in accordance with the dharma-dhātu: in the four deportments not a single sojourn is in vain. He recalls the inconceivable virtues of all the Buddhas, constantly contemplates the bhūtatathatā, and dissolves karmic obstructions”). The opening passage establishes the work’s framing as a continuous-practice repentance integrated with daily-life meditation.

Abstract

The Liùqíng chànhuǐ is one of Wǒnhyo’s most distinctive ritual-liturgical works and reflects his programmatic integration of Tathāgatagarbha doctrine, Yogācāra analysis, and chànhuǐ practice. The repentance is structured around the six sense-faculties as the locus of karman-production; the practitioner takes refuge in the ten-direction Buddhas, contemplates the bhūtatathatā of all phenomena, and uses meditative absorption to dissolve karmic accumulations. Together with KR6k0194 Púsà jièběn chífàn yàojì, it represents Wǒnhyo’s contribution to the East Asian Buddhist practical-ethics literature; the work is studied as the principal extant Silla chànhuǐ manual. Composition belongs to Wǒnhyo’s mature productive years.
