Wúzhōng shífó xiànghǎo chànyí 吳中石佛相好懺儀
A Repentance Liturgy for the Marks-and-Auspicious-Signs of the Stone Buddha in Wú by 傳燈 (Chuándēng, 集)
About the work
A short single-fascicle late-Míng chànyí 懺儀 (repentance liturgy) compiled by Yōuxī Chuándēng 幽溪傳燈 (傳燈, 1554–1628), the major late-Míng Tiāntái 天台宗 master at Gāomíngsì 高明寺 on Mount Tiāntái, for use at the Wúzhōng 吳中 (Sūzhōu region) stone-Buddha site — likely the famous Liángcháo colossal stone Buddha at Shífósì 石佛寺 in Sūzhōu region. The full title in some witnesses is Lǐ Wúzhōng shífó qǐzhǐ yíshì 禮吳中石佛起止儀式 (Procedural Manual for Reverencing the Stone Buddha at Wúzhōng, from Beginning to End) — the form preserved in the source-text head.
Prefaces
The work opens directly with the liturgical opening formulas: 一切恭敬 (“complete respect”), 一心頂禮十方常住三寶 (“with one mind I prostrate to the abiding Three Jewels of the ten directions”), followed by the yībài 一拜 (one bow) and hùguì shāoxiāng sànhuā 互跪燒香散華 (“kneeling alternately, burning incense, scattering flowers”). The opening xiānghuā gòngyǎng 香華供養 verse: 願此香華雲徧滿十方界 (“may this cloud of fragrance and flowers pervade the ten directions”) establishes the standard Tiāntái chànyí opening.
Abstract
The Shífó xiànghǎo chànyí is a specialised repentance liturgy designed for performance at the Wúzhōng stone-Buddha site, focusing devotionally on the xiànghǎo 相好 (the lakṣaṇa and anuvyañjana, “the marks and the auspicious signs” of a Buddha-body). The liturgy belongs to Chuándēng’s broader chànyí corpus — produced for specific local devotional sites in his Tiāntái-mountain orbit — and reflects the integrated Tiāntái-Pure-Land devotional programme he developed at Gāomíngsì. Author signature: 天台山幽溪沙門 傳燈 集 (Compiled by Chuándēng, monk of Yōuxī on Mount Tiāntái). Composition is bracketed by Chuándēng’s residence at Gāomíngsì from 1587 and his death in 1628.
