Āpídámó Jùshě Lùn Běn Sòng 阿毘達磨俱舍論本頌

Abhidharmakośa-kārikā: Root Verses of the Treasury of Higher Doctrine by 世親菩薩 (造), 玄奘 (譯)

About the work

The Āpídámó Jùshě Lùn Běn Sòng 阿毘達磨俱舍論本頌 (Skt. Abhidharmakośa-kārikā, “Root Verses of the Abhidharmakośa”; CBETA T29n1560) is a Tang dynasty extraction of the verse (kārikā) portion of Vasubandhu’s Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, 1 juan, by 世親菩薩 and translated by 玄奘. The source text header reads “世親菩薩造 / 三藏法師玄奘奉詔譯” with the subtitle “(說一切有部)” identifying the Sarvāstivāda school. The Taisho cross-reference reads “No. 1560 [cf. Nos. 1558, 1559, 1561].”

Prefaces

No independent preface. The verse text begins directly with the eight-chapter sequence.

Abstract

The Kośa-kārikā consists of the approximately 600 root verses (kārikā) of the Abhidharmakośa (KR6l0023, T1558), extracted from Xuanzang’s full translation and presented without the accompanying prose auto-commentary (bhāṣya). This format served practical needs: students could memorize the verses, and commentators could use them as a base-text. The verse text follows the same eight-pāda structure as the full work (分別界品 through 分別定品), plus the 破我品 verses.

This kārikā-text is the base text on which 圓暉 圓暉 composed his Jùshě lùn sòng shū (KR6l0036, T1823), which became the dominant East Asian commentary on the verses.
