Shùnzhènglǐ Lùn Shùwén Jì 順正理論述文記

Notes on the Text of the Nyāyānusāra by 元瑜 (述)

About the work

The Shùnzhènglǐ Lùn Shùwén Jì 順正理論述文記 (CBETA X53n843) is a Tang dynasty commentary on Saṃghabhadra’s Nyāyānusāra (KR6l0031, T1562), preserved in the Xuzangjing (卍新纂大日本續藏經) Vol. 53, No. 843. The catalog lists 2 juan, and the CBETA edition carries 沙門元瑜述 (“composed by the monk Yuányú”). The surviving text appears to cover only certain juan of the original commentary (the available files carry 順正理論述文記第九 and the 18th), suggesting that either the original work was substantially longer or that only selected sections have been preserved.

Prefaces

No preface preserved in the surviving sections.

Abstract

Yuányú 元瑜 (exact dates unknown; Tang dynasty) was a Yogācāra and Abhidharma monk who studied the Xuanzang transmission. He composed this commentary (shùwén jì 述文記 — “notes on the text”) on Saṃghabhadra’s Nyāyānusāra, which at 80 juan was one of the most challenging texts in Xuanzang’s translation corpus. The Shùwén jì appears to be a literary-explanatory commentary (focusing on clarifying the language and argument of the base text) rather than a doctrinal reinterpretation. The surviving sections (juan 9 and 18 in the Xuzangjing edition) deal with Abhidharma categories of unconditioned and conditioned dharmas (asaṃskṛta / saṃskṛta).

The text is rare among Chinese Abhidharma commentaries in focusing on the Nyāyānusāra rather than on Vasubandhu’s Kośa. No other major commentary on the Nyāyānusāra survives.
