Jùshě Lùn Shū 俱舍論疏

Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa by 神泰 (述)

About the work

The Jùshě Lùn Shū 俱舍論疏 (CBETA X53n836) is a Tang dynasty partial commentary on Xuanzang’s Abhidharmakośa (KR6l0023, T1558), composed by the monk Shéntài 神泰 (神泰), a disciple of Xuanzang who served as zhèng yì 證義 (doctrinal proof-reader) on translation projects. The surviving edition carries 7 juan in the Xuzangjing, but the file listing (showing juan 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 of the commentary) indicates that the text is incomplete: some juan are missing from the surviving transmission. The CBETA source carries orig (original manuscript) as its edition witness.

Prefaces

No independent preface is preserved in the surviving text, which begins directly with the table of contents and first-juan commentary on 分別界品第一.

Abstract

Shéntài 神泰 (fl. mid-7th century CE) was one of Xuanzang’s inner-circle disciples. He participated in the translation team at Cí-ēn-sì 慈恩寺 and other Tang translation halls, working as 證義 (doctrinal proof-reader) — a senior position confirming the accuracy of Abhidharma rendering. His Jùshě lùn shū predates (or is roughly contemporary with) 普光’s (KR6l0034) and 法寶’s Shū (KR6l0035), representing the earliest surviving commentary on Xuanzang’s Kośa translation from a direct disciple. The surviving 7 juan cover the first two pāda chapters (分別界品 and 分別根品), making it a partial commentary at best.

The text is preserved only in the Xuzangjing (卍新纂大日本續藏經) edition and was apparently not included in the main Taisho corpus, suggesting it entered East Asian circulation through Japanese manuscript transmission.
