Jùshě Lùn Fǎzōngyuán 俱舍論法宗原

The Doctrinal Origins of the Abhidharmakośa by 普光 (撰)

About the work

The Jùshě Lùn Fǎzōngyuán 俱舍論法宗原 (CBETA X53n837) is a Tang dynasty 1-juan systematic categorization of the five types of dharmas according to the Abhidharmakośa, composed by 大乘光法師 — Pǔguāng 普光 (普光) under his full title “Great Vehicle Light Dharma Master.” The text opens “大乘光法師撰 / 依說一切有部諸法宗原略有五種一色法二心法三心所有法四心法五無為法” — identifying the five categories: form (rūpa) dharmas, mental (citta) dharmas, mental associates (caitasika), conformation-independent formations (citta-viprayukta-saṃskāra), and unconditioned (asaṃskṛta) dharmas.

Abstract

This brief treatise by 普光 serves as a systematic categorical index to Kośa Abhidharma, presenting the five-fold classification of dharmas (pañca-dharma-skandha) with their subdivisions. It is a reference companion to his longer commentary (KR6l0034) rather than an independent work. The text is preserved only in the Xuzangjing (卍新纂大日本續藏經) and suggests that 普光’s pedagogical output included both comprehensive exegesis and compact summaries for practical use. The five-category scheme (sè xīn xīnsuǒ bùxiāng-yìng wéiwéi 色心心所不相應無為) is the standard Sarvāstivāda dharma taxonomy as presented in the Kośa.
