About the work

A 32-fascicle lemma-by-lemma commentary on the first 32 juǎn of the Yúqié shī dì lùn (KR6n0001, T30n1579) — covering the eight initial bhūmi of the Běndì fēn 本地分 — by the late-Tang Cí’ēn commentators 清素 (Qīngsù) and 澄淨 (Chéngjìng). The work was largely lost to the principal Chinese canonical traditions but survived in the Jīn 金-dynasty Edition of the Canon (the Zhàochéng 趙城 / Guǎngshèngsì 廣勝寺 manuscript-print canon, recovered in 1933), where it is included as A120n1565. Subsequently incorporated into the Zhōnghuá dàzàngjīng and CBETA. The text preserves a stream of late-Tang lemma-by-lemma Cí’ēn exegesis on the Yogācārabhūmi otherwise known only fragmentarily (and largely through quotation in KR6n0007 Yúqié lùn jì).

Structural Division

CANWWW does not assign a TOC for A120n1565. Internally the 32 juǎn track the first eight bhūmi of KR6n0001: wǔshíshēn xiāngyīng dì, yì dì, yǒuxún yǒusì, sānmóhěnduō, fēi sānmóhěnduō, yǒuxīn wúxīn, wénsuǒchéng, sīsuǒchéng (covering juǎn 1–32 of the master treatise).

Abstract

The dating bracket adopted (750–850) reflects the absence of internal dating evidence and the reasonable inference that the work is post-窺基 / Huìzhāo / Zhìzhōu (whose commentaries it draws on systematically) but pre-Five-Dynasties. The Jīn Guǎngshèngsì manuscript-print canon as discovered in 1933 contains many otherwise-lost late-Tang Buddhist works of similar character. The work entered modern circulation through the Sòng zàng yízhēn 宋藏遺珍 facsimile project of the 1930s and the subsequent Zhōnghuá dàzàngjīng 中華大藏經.

The yìyǎn 義演 (“meaning-elaboration”) format is exegetical-paraphrastic rather than question-and-answer, providing line-by-line comment on the master treatise. The work is one of the principal sources for our understanding of Cí’ēnzōng commentarial practice in the second half of the Tang and is uniquely useful for reconstructing how the lemma-level details of the Yogācārabhūmi were taught at the lower-ranking Cí’ēn institutions outside the Cháng’ān centre.

The text is one of the most important fruits of the rediscovery of the Jīn-dynasty Guǎngshèngsì manuscript-print canon at Zhàochéng (Shānxī) in 1933 — a discovery that brought back into circulation a substantial number of late-Tang Buddhist commentaries that had been lost to the standard Sino-Japanese canonical tradition.
