About the work
窺基’s lemma-by-lemma commentary on KR6n0055 Wéishí èrshí lùn 唯識二十論 (T31n1590), 玄奘’s translation of Vasubandhu’s Viṃśatikā-vṛtti. Together with KR6n0026 Chéng wéishí lùn shùjì (T43n1830) on the Triṃśikā, this shùjì completes Kuījī’s two principal Cí’ēn commentaries on the canonical “two treatises” (èr lùn 二論) of Yogācāra Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi. Two fascicles, frequently subdivided into upper and lower halves.
Structural Division
CANWWW (T43N1834) lists KR6n0055 Wéishí èrshí lùn (T31n1590) as the related text. The two juǎn track the twenty kārikā of Vasubandhu’s verse text in sequence, with Kuījī expanding each verse into an extended doctrinal analysis.
Abstract
The shùjì is one of three principal works by 窺基 on the Viṃśatikā — alongside the lost full shū 疏 (mentioned in KR2m0019 Sòng gāosēng zhuàn j. 4) and a topical compendium also lost. The surviving shùjì is the canonical Cí’ēn commentary and was transmitted to Heian Japan as a foundational Hossō study text.
Kuījī’s exegesis draws extensively on Dharmapāla’s KR6n0056 Chéng wéishí bǎoshēng lùn (T31n1591) — in places nearly verbatim, suggesting Kuījī had access to the Dharmapāla commentary in some form before Yìjìng’s later translation, perhaps via Xuánzàng’s notes or through the parallel Sanskrit material brought back from India. The commentary expounds, on Vasubandhu’s twenty verses, the standard Yogācāra refutation of external-object realism, the elaborate analysis of vāsanā (xíqì 習氣) as the operative cause of inter-stream agreement, and the technical Cí’ēn doctrine of the four aspects of cognition (jiànfēn, xiāngfēn, zìzhèngfēn, zhèngzìzhèngfēn 見相自證證自證分).
The dating bracket (661–682) covers Kuījī’s productive teaching period from the publication of Xuánzàng’s Viṃśatikā translation through to his death. The work is heavily cited in subsequent East Asian Yogācāra literature; the principal sub-commentary is KR6n0083 Zájí lùn shùjì by Kuījī himself (on a related work) and the various Heian and Kamakura Hossō school sub-commentaries on the èrshí lùn shùjì (e.g. by Zenju 善珠).
