About the work
玄奘’s ten-fascicle translation of 無性菩薩’s (Asvabhāva, c. 450–530) commentary on Asaṅga’s Mahāyāna-saṅgraha. Distinct from the parallel Vasubandhu bhāṣya — translated by Xuánzàng as KR6n0064 (T31n1597) — and constituting, with the latter, the canonical commentarial pair on the root text KR6n0060 (T31n1594). Carried out at the Hóngfúsì 弘福寺 translation site in 648–649 as part of Xuánzàng’s systematic Mahāyāna-saṅgraha triple translation (root + Vasubandhu + Asvabhāva).
Structural Division
CANWWW (T31N1598) does not preserve a per-fascicle internal table. The ten juǎn track Asvabhāva’s commentary on the ten chapters of the Mahāyāna-saṅgraha, opening with a verse-homage (“稽首大覺諸如來 / 無上正法真聖眾…”) characteristic of Indian commentarial introductions.
Abstract
The Asvabhāva commentary supplies what Vasubandhu’s bhāṣya does not: detailed analyses of the logical-epistemological apparatus underlying Asaṅga’s exposition, especially in the chapters on the basis (āśraya — the ālayavijñāna) and the three natures (trisvabhāva). Where Vasubandhu’s bhāṣya is abhidharmic and topical, Asvabhāva’s is more philosophical and dialectical. The two were studied together in the Cí’ēn school as complementary readings of the Mahāyāna-saṅgraha.
The Sanskrit original of Asvabhāva’s commentary is lost; the work survives in Chinese (T1598) and Tibetan (D 4051). The Chinese version was completed by Xuánzàng’s team between Zhēnguān 22 (648) and Zhēnguān 23 (649), per the Kāiyuán shìjiào lù j. 8. It became, with KR6n0060 and KR6n0064, the standard Yogācāra text-base for seventh- and eighth-century East Asian Buddhist study; in Heian Japan, both bhāṣya commentaries continued to be referenced in Hossō school sub-commentaries, though Vasubandhu’s was generally given doctrinal priority.
