Bā shí guījǔ sòng zhù 八識規矩頌注
Annotations on the Eight-Consciousnesses Verses by 行舟 (Xūzhōu Xíngzhōu, 註)
About the work
A single-fascicle early-Qīng interlinear annotation on the Bā shí guījǔ sòng 八識規矩頌 by 行舟 Xūzhōu Xíngzhōu, companion piece to his KR6n0138 Bā shí guījǔ qiǎnshuō. Preserved in the Manji Xuzangjing 卍續藏 at X55n0897.
Prefaces
No separate preface; the text opens directly with the first verse and Xíngzhōu’s running interlinear gloss in small-character notation: “xìngjìng xiànliàng tōng sān xìng 性境現量通三性 (just because the true nature is unclear, all sorts of false natures arise)” — Xíngzhōu’s notes are characteristically Chán-flavoured rather than Cí’ēn-philological, treating each line as a meditation-prompt rather than as a doctrinal proposition.
Abstract
The Sòng zhù is the more compact of Xíngzhōu’s pair on the guījǔ, providing a verse-by-verse annotation in interlinear small-character format. Each canonical verse-line is followed by a short Chán-style annotation that often takes the form of a doctrinal gōngàn — pointing past the analytical content of the verse to the meditative situation it describes. This makes the Sòng zhù one of the more idiosyncratic guījǔ commentaries: closer to a Chán yǔlù in style than to the standard Cí’ēn philological commentary.
The dating window 1644–1700 brackets the early-Qīng productive period; lifedates of Xíngzhōu are not securely attested.
