Xiàngzōng bā yào zhíjiě 相宗八要直解
Direct Explanation of the Eight Essential [Texts] of the Characteristics-School by 智旭 (Ǒuyì Zhìxù, 解)
About the work
A single-fascicle late-Míng commentary by 智旭 Ǒuyì Zhìxù (1599–1655) on the eight foundational Yogācāra texts compiled by 洪恩 in KR6n0143 Xiàngzōng bā yào 相宗八要. Preserved in the Manji Xuzangjing 卍續藏 at X55n0901. The capstone text in Zhìxù’s zhíjiě set on the late-Míng Yogācāra core curriculum, alongside KR6n0106 Bǎifǎ míngmén lùn zhíjiě, KR6n0115 Guān suǒyuányuán lùn zhíjiě, KR6n0117 Guān suǒyuányuán lùn shì zhíjiě, and KR6n0137 Bā shí guījǔ zhíjiě.
Structural Division
The text follows the Bā yào sequence (cf. KR6n0143). The opening of the source text begins with section No. 901-8 — the Liù líhé shì fǎshì lüèjiě 六離合釋法式略解 (“Brief Explanation of the Pattern of the Six Compound-Word Analyses”) — illustrating Zhìxù’s distinctive approach: he often re-orders the Bā yào sequence to bring philological aids forward, opening with the Liù líhé compound-analysis which he treats as a propaedeutic technical aid for parsing the rest of the doctrine. The six analyses are: yīzhǔ shì 依主釋 (tatpuruṣa), chíyè shì 持業釋 (karmadhāraya), yǒucái shì 有財釋 (bahuvrīhi), xiāngwéi shì 相違釋 (dvandva), dàishù shì 帶數釋 (dvigu), línjìn shì 隣近釋 (proximity-modification — a sub-type of bahuvrīhi).
Prefaces
Authorship line embedded in the section header: “Liù líhé shì fǎshì lüèjiě — Ǒuyì Zhìxù lüèjiě 蕅益智旭略解.” No separate authorial preface; the work proceeds text-by-text through the eight texts of the Bā yào with Zhìxù’s compact running explication.
Abstract
Zhìxù’s Zhíjiě on the Bā yào is the single most influential late-Míng Yogācāra teaching aid: by providing a unified compact commentary across the entire eight-text curriculum, Zhìxù effectively became the standard reference-author for late-Míng and Qīng Yogācāra study. His distinctive contribution is the integrative reading: each of the eight texts is presented in light of the others, with cross-references that build up an integrated picture of the Cí’ēn doctrinal system in its compact didactic form. The work is the principal vehicle by which Zhìxù’s reading of the late-Míng Yogācāra revival reached the Qīng monastic educational system.
The dating window 1630–1655 brackets Zhìxù’s productive period after his major doctrinal turn around 1631.
