Yīnmíng rù zhèng lǐ lùn yì zuǎn yào 因明入正理論義纂要

Compiled Essentials of the Treatise on Entering Correct Reasoning of Hetuvidyā by 慧沼 (Huìzhǎo, 集)

About the work

The second of 慧沼’s three yīnmíng works (with KR6o0018 and KR6o0022), this one juǎn offers a thematic digest of the most important interpretive points of the Yīnmíng rù zhèng lǐ lùn KR6o0003, compiled ( 集) rather than composed in linear-commentary form. It opens by surveying five distinct interpretations (五釋) of the title-words yīnmíng found in earlier commentators, and proceeds to systematize the doctrine of the three causal-types (生因 productive, 了因 cognitive, 智因 intellectual) and the four sub-types of perception and inference. The work functions as a reference compendium intended to guide readers through the Rù lùn and Kuījī’s Dàshū by topic rather than by passage, and is therefore especially useful for navigating disputed-question discussions.

Structural Division

CANWWW (T44N1842) lists no internal sub-divisions. CANWWW related-text pointers connect this commentary back to the parent Yīnmíng rù zhèng lǐ lùn KR6o0003 (T32n1630).

Abstract

The colophon “淄洲大雲寺沙門慧沼集” credits Huìzhǎo of the Dàyúnsì 大雲寺 in Zīzhōu 淄洲 as compiler. The work appears to have been written together with the Yìduàn KR6o0018 in the same period of Huìzhǎo’s mature exegetical activity (c. 690–714); modern scholarship treats them as a paired set, with the Yìduàn taking the form of disputed-question arbitration and the Zuǎnyào taking the form of topical synthesis. The Zuǎnyào is more selective than the Yìduàn: it concentrates on the interpretive cruxes that govern the structure of yīnmíng doctrine, especially the analyses of parārtha and svārtha operations and the canonical four-fold typology of contradiction (四相違). Internal evidence shows that Huìzhǎo regards Kuījī’s Dàshū KR6o0008 as the orthodox standard but is willing to depart from it on a small number of points where he claims to recover Xuánzàng’s own oral teaching. The Taishō follows the Korean canon as base text, collated against the 甲 and 原 manuscripts.
