About the work
A short single-juǎn devotional text combining a verse-cycle in praise of Amitābha Buddha (Wúliángshòu fó zàn 無量壽佛讚) composed by the Northern-Sòng Vinaya master 元照 Língzhī Yuánzhào 靈芝元照 (1048–1116) — abbot of the Língzhīsì 靈芝寺 in Hángzhōu and a major Sòng-period Pure Land commentator — with an interlinear annotation (zhù 注) by his Southern-Sòng Vinaya-school successor 戒度 Jièdù 戒度 (fl. mid-12th century).
Abstract
The verses by Yuánzhào belong to the Vinaya-school Pure Land tradition that Yuánzhào himself almost single-handedly created — a distinctive Sòng-period synthesis in which the Vinaya tradition’s emphasis on monastic discipline and ritual precision is brought into productive dialogue with Pure Land devotional practice. Yuánzhào is best known for his 《觀無量壽佛經義疏》 Guān wúliàngshòu fó jīng yì shū KR6f0077 (T1754), the Vinaya-school commentary on the Visualization Sūtra; the Zàn belongs to the same intellectual programme.
The verses follow the standard medieval Pure Land zàn template — extolling Amitābha’s lakṣaṇa, his Pure Land cosmology, his bodhisattva retinue, and the salvific operation of his vows — but with a distinctively Vinaya-school inflection: the verses are precisely metrically regular, the doctrinal content carefully aligned with the Guān-jīng visualisation framework, and the devotional register controlled and dignified rather than ecstatic. Jièdù’s annotation supplies cross-references to Yuán-zhào’s other Pure Land works, scriptural source-citations for each verse, and explanatory paraphrase for the more compressed passages.
The text is preserved only in the Xùzàngjīng 卍續藏 (X1466). The dating bracket adopted (1080–1190) covers Yuánzhào’s mature period at Língzhīsì up to Jièdù’s annotation work in the mid Southern Sòng. The base verses date to Yuánzhào’s lifetime (1048–1116); the annotation is later, probably c. 1150–1190.

Other points of interest
The collaboration between Yuánzhào (verses, late eleventh / early twelfth century) and Jièdù (annotation, mid twelfth century) — both of the same Língzhī Vinaya-school lineage — illustrates the institutional continuity of the Sòng Vinaya-school Pure Land tradition across two generations. The composite text is one of the few Vinaya-school Pure Land devotional texts to survive in the canonical recension; most of the Vinaya tradition’s writing was on monastic discipline rather than devotion.
