About the work

A single-juǎn question-and-answer (wèndá 問答) tract on Pure Land practice in 100 numbered exchanges, composed by the Língyánshān monk 悟開 Wùkāi during the early-to-mid nineteenth century. The format follows the established Pure Land huòwèn 或問 (“doubts and questions”) tradition that runs from Tiāntái Zhìyǐ 智顗’s Jìngtǔ shí yí lùn 淨土十疑論 KR6p0008 through Tiānrú Wéizé 天如惟則’s Jìngtǔ huòwèn KR6p0053 and the YuánMíng commentarial tradition.

Abstract

The author’s preface (“一念念佛,全念是佛”) sets out the doctrinal premise of the zìxìng mítuó / wéixīn jìngtǔ 自性彌陀/唯心淨土 (“Amitābha-as-self-nature / Pure-Land-as-mind-only”) synthesis, explicitly invoking Tiāntái Zhìyǐ’s Shíyí lùn and Tiānrú Wéizé’s Huòwèn as the historical antecedents of his own work and noting that the xiàngjì mòfǎ 像季末法 (degenerate-age) condition has produced an even greater proliferation of obstacles and doubts requiring further pastoral clarification. The 100 questions then proceed through doctrinal, practical, and pastoral concerns:

  • doctrinal questions on the relation of zìxìng mítuó to xīfāng mítuó (Amitābha as self-nature vs. as Western Buddha);
  • practical questions on the manner, posture, frequency, vocal-vs-silent character, and breath-coordination of chímíng recitation;
  • pastoral questions on the response to the dying zhìniàn moment, on dreams and visions during practice, on the integration of Chán cānjiū and Pure Land niànfó, on the place of moral cultivation, on the response to scepticism from Confucian or Chán interlocutors;
  • soteriological questions on rebirth ranks, the jiǔpǐn 九品 hierarchy, and the eventual ascent to bútuìzhuǎn 不退轉 (non-retrogression).

The work belongs alongside Wùkāi’s other short Pure Land tracts in the same anthology cluster (Jìngyè zhī jīn KR6p0102, X1183) and shares the same pastoral, lay-accessible register. Preserved in the Xùzàngjīng 卍續藏 as X1184.
