About the work

A short, accessible single-juǎn exhortative tract on Pure Land practice compiled (zuǎnshù 纂述) by the lay Pure Land practitioner 真益願 Zhēn Yìyuàn 真益願, who self-designates as Jìngyè xíngrén 淨業行人 (“a practitioner of pure karma”). The work is structured as a series of concise quàn 勸 (exhortations / persuasions) urging the practitioner to take up niànfó in earnest, organised into ten or so numbered sections.

Abstract

The text is preserved with two later prefaces: a Chóngkè jìngtǔ qièyào xù 重刻淨土切要序 (preface to a reprinting) by an anonymous “Wúxiàngshì” 無相室 dated Xiánfēng xīnyǒu 咸豐辛酉, fódàn rì (the Buddha’s birthday, 8th day of 4th month, of 1861); and a second preface by Pān Zēngyíng 潘曾瑩 (1808–1878) dated Xiánfēng yǐmǎo 咸豐乙卯 autumn 7th month (1855). Pān’s preface frames the text as a bǎofá 寶筏 (jewel-raft) for Pure Land practice and identifies the original authorship as that of his cousin Gēngtáng 耕塘 (“Plough-Pond”) whose lay name is given as Zhēn Yìyuàn. Both prefaces describe the work as already in some circulation; the chóngkè notice indicates that the 1861 edition is a reprinting rather than the editio princeps.

The body of the text comprises ten quàn numbered exhortations:

  1. Quàn fāxīn niànfó 勸發心念佛 (raise the mind for niànfó);
  2. Quàn shíxīn niànfó 勸實心念佛 (recite with sincere mind);
  3. Quàn qiú shēng jìngtǔ 勸求生淨土 (seek rebirth in the Pure Land);
  4. Quàn zhèngzhù shuāngxiū 勸正助雙修 (cultivate primary and auxiliary practices together);
  5. exhortations to practitioners on root-cultivation, on Daoist syncretism, and on the niànfó ritual;
  6. a fāyuàn huíxiàng wén 發願迴向文 (vow-and-dedication formulary);
  7. a shíniàn fǎ 十念法 (ten-recitation method);
  8. an appendix containing two passages by Xīmíng jūshì 錫明居士 against confused mixing of niànfó with sectarian heterodox teachings (邪教) and against confused mixing with paper-money offerings, plus Lóngshū jūshì (= 王日休 Wáng Rìxiū) on the futility of “depositing-money offerings” (寄庫); and 9. a Línzhōng zhōují yàoyǔ 臨終舟楫要語 (essential sayings on the deathbed).

The work is a characteristic mid-Qīng lay-pastoral Pure Land tract, modest in scope but careful to distinguish orthodox Pure Land devotion from the popular sectarian mixings (the explicit prohibition of xiéjiào 邪教 is striking and reflects the post-Báilián jiào 白蓮教 anxiety of the mid-nineteenth-century literati Pure Land tradition). Preserved in the Xùzàngjīng 卍續藏 as X1186.

The dating bracket adopted (1750–1855) is broad: the original composition predates the 1855 preface but cannot be precisely fixed.

The 1855 preface is by Pān Zēngyíng 潘曾瑩 (1808–1878, jìnshì 1832), a senior official from the prominent Sūzhōu Pān 潘 lineage and brother of the more famous Pān Zǔyīn 潘祖蔭 (1830–1890). The Pān 潘 family of Sūzhōu was one of the most consequential late-Qīng official lineages, and Pān Zēngyíng’s interest in his cousin’s Pure Land tract documents the continuing penetration of Pure Land devotional practice into the high-status mid-nineteenth-century literati class.
