A single-juǎn exegetical work composed (shù 述) by the late-Qīng lay-Buddhist scholar 張淵 Zhāng Yuān 張淵 (hào Qiánshìshì 潛室氏, of Yǎnnán 剡南 = the southern Yǎn region in modern Shèngzhōu 嵊州, Zhèjiāng). The text is a line-by-line zhíjiě 直解 (“direct explication”) of the popular eight-line bājù guānjì 八句觀偈 — a standard verse-précis of the Guān Wúliàngshòu fó jīng 觀無量壽佛經 contemplation method that had become a widely circulated devotional shorthand in the Qīng. The zhíjiě draws out the doctrinal and contemplative content of the verse for the benefit of qióngxiāng wěixiàng, lǎoyòu fùnǚ 窮鄉委巷老幼婦女 (lay practitioners in remote villages — including the young, the old, and women) who knew only the eight-line verse and had no access to the full corpus.
Abstract
Zhāng Yuān’s preface (xù) is dated Tóngzhì jiǎxū mèngxià 同治甲戌孟夏 = the first month of summer of Tóngzhì 13 (= April / May 1874), signed Yǎnnán hòuxué Zhāng Yuān 剡南後學張淵. The preface frames the work historically: niànfó practice as the hónggāng 宏綱 (chief netting-rope) of all Buddhist teaching descends through the Língshān 靈山 transmission (Vulture Peak), is implanted in China through the Eastern Jìn 東晉 Lúshān 廬山 community of 慧遠 Huìyuǎn, then is doctrinally articulated in successive patriarchal stages: Suí-era Zhìyǐ 智者 with the Shíyí lùn KR6p0008; Táng-era Fēixī 飛錫 with the Bǎowáng lùn KR6p0011; Sòng-era Yōután 優曇 with the Liánzōng bǎojiàn KR6q0099; Yuán-era Tiānrú Wéizé with the Jìngtǔ huòwèn KR6p0053; Míng-era Ǒuyì Zhìxù of Língfēng 靈峰 with the Jìngtǔ shí yào KR6p0067 — the “jí dàchéng” 集大成 culmination. Zhāng laments that this entire patristic corpus is inaccessible to ordinary lay practitioners, who in his time know only the eight-line guānjì and reduce niànfó to a popular folk-religious practice (including the abuse of treating it as a substitute for paper-money offerings). The zhíjiě is offered as a corrective and remedial gloss.
The work is collaboratively edited by a Yǎn-region Pure Land circle: Zhāng Mèngxiān 章夢仙 (hào Lùyóushì 鹿遊氏) compiled (jí 輯) the materials; Lóu Rén 樓仁 (hào Shēnjìngshānshì 深靜山氏) of Yǎnxī 剡西 collaborated, with Zhào Hóngwén 趙洪文 (hào Xǔzhāishì 許齋氏) and the monk Jièsù Liánfāng 戒肅蓮芳 jointly checking the proofs.
