A short single-juǎn Pure Land devotional anthology composed (zhù 著) by the late-Qīng monk 乘戒 Chéng-jiè 乘戒, self-designated Hǎi-yǒng Xiǎo Bái-huā Hǎi-àn shān-rén Chéng-jiè Dìng-huì 海湧小白花海岸山人乘戒定慧 — combining the studio-name Hǎi-yǒng Xiǎo Bái-huā Hǎi-àn shān-rén 海湧小白花海岸山人 (“Mountain-Wayfarer of the Sea-Surge Little White-Flower Coast”) with the dharma-name pair Chéng-jiè 乘戒 (“vehicle-and-precepts”) / Dìng-huì 定慧 (“samādhi-and-prajñā”). The title Wéi-xīn jí — “mind-only collection” — frames the work within the wéi-xīn jìng-tǔ 唯心淨土 doctrinal frame: the Pure Land is identical with the practitioner’s mind, and niàn-fó practice is therefore the recollective return to the xīn-fó qí mǐn 心佛齊泯 (“simultaneous extinction of mind and Buddha”) jìng (state).
Abstract
The zìxù 自序 sets out the doctrinal frame in dense scholastic terms: the shortcut to cultivation is niànfó; the essence of niànfó is the guān xīn 觀心 (contemplation of the mind); without clarity about xīn, vocal niànfó is mere lip-labour in which “one does not know who is the one reciting” (bù zhī niàn zhě shì shuí 不知念者是誰); but where the practitioner’s néngniàn zhī xīn, suǒniàn zhī fó 能念之心所念之佛 (“the mind that recites” and “the Buddha who is recited”) are zhíxià shuāngwàng 直下雙忘 (“directly forgotten in both”), the jìguāng zhēnjìng 寂光真境 (“true-realm of quiescent radiance”) manifests immediately. This is the zìxìng mítuó / wéixīn jìngtǔ 自性彌陀/唯心淨土 doctrinal frame in its most compressed scholastic form.
The text then deploys an extended yī jù Ēmítuó 一句阿彌陀 anaphora — fifteen sequential expansions on the meaning of “one phrase: Amitābha” — followed by the framing-meditation yī jù liǎorán chāo bǎiyì, shífāng shìjiè xiàn quánshēn 一句了然超百億十方世界現全身 (“one phrase, clearly comprehended, transcends hundreds-of-millions [of kalpas]; in the worlds of the ten directions the whole body manifests”). The work concludes with the author’s pastoral note that the text was occasioned by the questions of his Pure Land society associates regarding the doctrinal integration of Chán cānjiū and Pure Land niànfó (chánjìng wéixīn zhī zhǐ 禪淨唯心之旨).
The text is one of the late-Qīng Chán-Pure Land integrationist (chánjìng shuāngxiū 禪淨雙修) compositions; doctrinally aligned with the Jiǎohǔ jí KR6p0096 and the broader Yánshòu-derived integrative tradition. Preserved in the Xùzàngjīng 卍續藏 as X1208. The dating bracket adopted (1840–1900) is broad as no firm internal dating is preserved.
