Shānān zálù 山菴雜錄
Miscellaneous Records of the Mountain Hermitage
by 無慍 Shùzhōng Wúyùn 恕中無慍 (1309–1386), late-Yuán / early-Míng Yángqí-branch Línjì master (see also KR6q0349; zì Shùzhōng 恕中, self-style Kōngshì dàorén 空室道人 — not “Héngshān,” as an earlier stub erroneously recorded).
About the work
A two-juan collection of miscellaneous Chán-related notes, anecdotes, and biographical fragments, by the early-Míng Línjì-line monk Wúyùn. Title — “Miscellaneous Records of the Mountain Hermitage” — frames it as informal reflection rather than systematic compilation.
Abstract
A late-Yuán / early-Míng monastic miscellany in the genre between yǔlù (recorded sayings) and bǐjì 筆記 (literary jottings). Contains Wúyùn’s notes on contemporaries, anecdotes about earlier masters, and brief reflections on Chán teaching. As a primary source it preserves casual material that more formal lamp records and biographical compendia exclude.
Translations and research
No English translation. No dedicated monograph; cited in surveys of Yuán-Míng Chán miscellany literature.
Other points of interest
The genre — informal monastic miscellany — is well represented in the late-imperial Chán corpus and worth attention as a counterweight to the more formal lamp-record and yǔlù genres.
