Zōngjiàn fǎlín 宗鑑法林

Sectarian-Mirror Dharma-Forest — a monumental seventy-two-juan Qīng Chán gōng’àn comprehensive anthology, compiled collaboratively by the Jíyúntáng 集雲堂 (“Collected-Cloud Hall”) scriptorium. Compilation began in the spring of rénchén 壬辰 = Kāngxī 51 = 1712 at Fǎlínsì 法林寺 on the northern frontier (Sàiběi 塞北); the engraving was completed in the summer of jiǎwǔ 甲午 = Kāngxī 53 = 1714 at the Zōngjiàntáng 宗鑑堂 within Bǎilínsì 柏林寺 in the capital (Beijing). The title reflects the two-site compilation history.

  • Unusually broad case-coverage: the standard “1,700 classical gōng’àn” of Chán tradition is here expanded to 2,564 cases (later editions reached 2,720). The text is therefore the single most comprehensive gōng’àn-anthology in the entire Chán canonical tradition, incorporating cases from obscure and marginal sources as well as the standard canonical collection.

  • Integration of sòng and niān: unlike the Liánzhū tōngjí (KR6q0243; sònggǔ only) or the Zōngmén niāngǔ huìjí (KR6q0245; niāngǔ only), the Zōngjiàn fǎlín integrates both verse-commentary and prose-commentary for each case in a unified entry.

  • Lineage clarification: explicit separation of the Nányuè and Qīngyuán dharma-lines (per the Wǔ dēng yán tǒng 五燈嚴統 recension norm established by Fèiyǐn Tōngróng 費隱通容; see KR6q0172), producing clearer lineage-genealogical organisation.
